CERAMIC ART REVIEW ESSAY
Research:
1. Go to the new Mint Museum of Craft and Design, or Gallery WDO on N. Tryon Street; or the older Mint Museum on Randolph Road, both in Charlotte.
2. Identify a CONTEMPORARY CERAMIC ARTIST’S WORK there that you admire. Choose one piece that is no older than 50 years.
3. Find out as much as you can about this artist and their work:
• Inquire about any additional information the gallery or museum has about this artist
• Search the web to find more information and/or images about this artist
• Search the library for more information and/or images about this artist
• If available, email this artist with pertinent questions for your paper.


Paper: This should be a short paper (approximately 2 pages or 500 words), typed, double spaced, with one inch margins, in size 11 or 12 font.
4. Write the title, your name and date you finished this paper at the top of the first page.
Ship three lines and begin your paper
• 1st paragraph: introduce the topic of this paper, ex.: artist and their work in your own
words,
• 2nd paragraph: describe the pieces you have seen in complete visual, emotional
and/or intellectual detail use many adjectives, in your own words.
• 3rd paragraph’ describe what else interests you about this artist and their work: in
addition to the above descriptions of the work, refer to art reviews, critical essays, and
what the artist says about their work.
• 4th paragraph: conclude with your opinion about this artist and their work, be specific.


Helpful hints:
1)
This is a short paper don’t repeat anything.
2) 2nd & 3rd paragraphs are most important it will show that you can write about (and think about)
what you see and research
3) Use footnotes or citation notes when quoting or paraphrasing from sources.
4) Use spell check, grammar check, then check again.
5. Attach a separate Works Cited page on this paper. You must use a minimum of 3 research sources. These can include primary sources: viewing the actual work in person, written or verbal conversations with the artist directly, essays or articles written by or that include quotes by the artist; or secondary sources: printed images of the art work, art reviews, critical essays, etc.
6. The UNCC Code of Academic Integrity applies to this paper; you can find this online or in your catalog. Plagiarism will earn you an F in this course.
7. Attach a minimum of two photos, photocopies or downloaded images of this artist’s work.
Please do not use a cover page, plastic or paper covers. Staple your paper in the upper left hand corner.
